Yesterday morning, March 27th, an historic meeting occurred: President Obama and Pope Francis met for the first time at the Vatican! The last meeting between a sitting President and a Pontiff was Obama's meeting with Pope Benedict XVI in 2009.
From reading all the news reports, the two men seemed to conduct themselves in an air of humility and positivity. "I was grateful to have the opportunity to speak with him about the responsibilities that we all share to care for the least of these, the poor, the excluded," Obama told reporters after the meeting. "And I was extremely moved by his insights about the importance of us all having a moral perspective on world problems and not simply thinking in terms of our own narrow self-interests."
It's no surprise that areas of common agreement between the two include Immigration, excessive Capitalism and Poverty. "Given his great moral authority, when the Pope speaks it carries enormous weight.", says Obama in reference to the Pope's concern for income inequality. But it's also unsurprising that the biggest issues they are carefully treading include the Church's teaching on Same-Sex Marriage, Abortion and Contraception, not to mention the HIGHLY controversial HHS Mandate, which forces Churches and Catholic schools to provide by law Contraceptions to it's followers.
Regardless of the wide-spanning issues that threaten to divide us as brothers and sisters in the human family, Obama and Francis seem committed to not only keeping relations between Washington and the Vatican stable, but progress in issues that are agreeable, while working on those that has no easy solution. "It doesn't mean we agree on every issue, but his voice is one that I think the world needs to hear. He challenges us," Obama told of Francis.
We continue, as All Is Love, to send out our prayers to these two men, that the guidance of all that is true goodness, true beauty and true justice continue to lead them in all they practice and govern with the upmost #LOVE and charity for all.
